Dean Martin dvd's Career as a singer was soaring to new heights when he met Frank Sinatra. Dean, Frank and a few of their friends revived a group called rat pack's in the 50's and 60's. The rat pack that Dean was a part of consisted of Frank, Sammy Davis Junior besides himself and occasionally Joey Bishop, Peter Lawfold and Shirley Maclaine would also join in. It was basically group in which all these men would hang out together and have fun. While Frank was the head of the group, the other two were all-time members and called themselves Dag (Dean) and Smokey (Sammy).
Frank referred to this as the clan or the summit; he wasn't particularly fond of the name rat pack's. This group got national attention when it publicly supported John F Kennedy during the presidential elections. The favorite hangout of this group was hotel The sands where they had fun filled gatherings cracking jokes and enjoying themselves. This hotel is no longer there, but at that time it was quite a modish place to hangout. The sands also witnessed many a memorable performance from this talented group of young men. These performances were often attended by JFK as well. That summer, Lawfold and Shirley Maclaine sang at the Democratic National Convention opening.
Eventually things didn't remain cordial between JFK and Frank and the group didn't survive for long after JFK's election campaign. Things turned sour between Frank and Peter as well. This was the 2nd time this group had been dissolved, the first rat pack consisted of Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra and a few of their friends; however the purpose of coming together was same, to have a jolly time together. They had been christened as the rat pack by Humphrey Bogart' s wife.
The trio of the group Frank, Sammy and Dean tried to bring it back to life in the 80's by organizing a tour together. However this attempt didn't succeed, primarily due to Dean's disturbed emotional condition. He had recently lost his son Dino and though he did start off with the tour, dropped out only after the first few appearances.
This didn't go down well with Frank and his relationship with Dean severed. However they reconciled a few months before Dean's death.
Hollywood's Ocean trilogy is based on the spirit of this group only. Another movie called rat pack was released depicting the friendship between the trio. However the essence of rat pack died with these three men.
